Data Storage in computer is called as memory. Memory stores useful information. In technical terms, memory is a form of semiconductor device which is called as RAM (Random Access Memory). It is a storage location that holds memory for a short interval of time. It requires power but if power is lost, data is also lost. It is the primary form of memory which is directly linked to the central processing unit of the computer. Secondary storage medium that keeps the information until it is deleted is the secondary storage of the computer. It is not linked directly to the central processing unit but uses some input and output devices to connect. Hard disk is the secondary storage which has slower access rate as compared to RAM. Other examples of secondary memory are CD, DVD drives, floppy disk, magnetic tape, paper tape, punch card etc. Floppy disk has magnetic storage in a circular or rectangular plastic shell. It generally stores the computer's operating system, software programs and other data. A CD stores digital data and is commercially used to store audio recordings. DVD or digital versatile disc is also for optical storage of data. It is similar to CD but has six times more storage capacity than CD.
