| A tennis court is where the game called tennis is played. It is a solid rectangular surface with a low net stretched across the center. Tennis is played on a rectangular flat surface, usually of grass, clay, concrete (hard court) or a synthetic suspended court. The court is 78 feet long, and its width is 27 feet for singles matches and 36 feet for doubles matches. Additional clear space around the court is required in order for players to achieve overrun balls for a total of 60 feet wide and 120 long. A net is stretched across the full width of the court, equivalent with the baselines, separating it into two equal ends. The net is 3 feet high in the center and 3 feet 6 inches high at the posts. There are four main types of courts depending on the materials used for the court surface: clay courts, hard courts, grass courts and indoor courts (carpet, rubber or wood). Each playing surface has its own distinctiveness which affects the playing style of the game. Indoor courts are also used so play can continue year-round. Common indoor surfaces are hard, carpet, and clay. Some players are more successful on certain surfaces and are known as "specialists" for that particular court. | |||
